The instructor and principal of Tennessee Slay University applied for the grant. The company is a braiding school in East Memphis.

Kori Randolph said she was very grateful for the help from the grant because earlier in the pandemic, she could barely feed her family.

Randolph is back to work now, but the foster mother of three will never forget how difficult life was when she had to stop working in March during the pandemic.

“I was like God saves us,” Randolph said. “I felt so helpless because I have foster kids who look up to me and they were just as scared and I had to try to be a hero to them.”

This is why she is grateful to the Black Business Association for providing grants of $ 300 to entrepreneurs like Randolph who have been affected by the pandemic.

BBA President Mark Yates spent the day visiting different companies to encourage them to apply for the grants. The organization received $ 1.2 million from a federal grant to the city of Memphis under the Cares Act.

“BBA knew that black businesses were going to be hit the hardest and here we are during this pandemic and we see that it’s over $ 1.2 billion in our community alone. “

“It’s like people now know that they have to be each other’s shoulder and like they said, it takes a village to raise a child. Right now, it takes a village to survive this pandemic, ”Randolph added.

Right now they are still reviewing requests, but on Monday they received 450 requests.

You must be a resident of Memphis to apply and you must be able to prove that you are in business.
