Stores will be open today, New Market Business Association president says

Dhaka New Market Business Association President Dewan Aminul Islam Shahin today claimed that a third party was involved in the clash between Dhaka College students and New Market traders.

At a press conference held at the association’s headquarters in New Market today, he also said that the shops will be open today.

He said traders want a peaceful environment. Behavioral counseling for store employees will be organized after Eid.

He added that after Eid, if someone comes to the New Market and faces bad behavior from store employees, they should file a complaint with the association. Action will be taken against them, he added.

The President expressed his sadness over the attack saying, “We have learned that students from Dhaka College were involved in this heinous incident. Yesterday when law enforcement called for businesses to close, all shops in the area were closed, but a clash still occurred. We regret that.”

“The attack on the journalists is also appalling,” he said, adding that the attack on the ambulance was by no means desirable.

“I don’t believe a businessman or a student can do something like that. There’s clearly a third party involved,” he said.

“I’m sure there was a third party here. However, if evidence of a businessman’s involvement in the incident is found, action will be taken against him,” the president added.

He also asked shopkeepers and employees in the New Market area not to say anything provocative to students and to treat teachers and students with respect.
